Color Blocking is back and stronger than ever! Originally introduced in the 1960’s and later 1980’s, this trend has once again been revisited by many designers in the Spring 2012 collections. If you want to partake in this trend without compromising your eco principles, check out the fabulous vegan color block shoe options below:
Oscars Red Carpet was lit up by Missi Pyle (a co-star in the best picture nominee “The Artist”) wearing a stunning turquoise dress that could set a new eco-friendly trend. The gown is the winner of the third annual Red Carpet Green Dress design contest, a competition created by Suzy Amis Cameron (the wife of “Avatar” and “Titanic” director James Cameron), and an ardent environmentalist.
The flowing blue gown was made with “cruelty-free silk,” meaning the worms that spun the material were not killed in the process of harvesting their silk. A natural mineral dye was used to tint the silk, recycled polyester lines the dress and vintage zippers complete the gown.
Valentina Delfino, a student of fashion design in Miami, submitted the winning design, and Emmy-winning designer Birgit Muller mentored Delfino and supervised the creation of the dress.
“There are so few clothing options that are eco-friendly, and [manufacturing] has a huge impact on our environment,” Pyle said at a fitting the day before the Oscars. “I’m so excited to be going on the red carpet in this gown!”
One of the undeniable advantages to living in New York is the virtually unlimited access to things, events and people. I decided to test whether this theory holds up for green shopping and began an online search for stores carrying eco-conscious fashion located in NY. Eager to go forth and conquer, I decided to visit the 4 shops on the list located in the Lower East Side which specialize in eco-fashion. Sadly, 2 out of 4 were no longer located at the listed addresses. However, the remaining 2 turned out to be a hit.

Kaight’s dim lighting provides an ambiance characteristic of the LES. Customers have room to browse and explore the offer of display. The current assortment features ready-to-wear, shoes, and accessories including bags, belts and jewelry. Many of the featured designers are local – such as jewelry by DLC Brooklyn that incorporates vintage pieces into its creations. The current collections match the aesthetic of the neighborhood and provide excellent weekend wear pieces for the customers looking for updated, laid back eco options for their wardrobe.
